Christ cares for his Church, his people, those for whom he suffered the wrath of His Father. Sadly, the rest of humanity is doomed to everlasting fire. We don't know who. So our command is tell of Christ and His salvation to all people, no matter who, no matter what, no matter where. We treat everyone as though they can be elect. And we do this by obeying and declaring the Gospel, which God then uses to bring His people to faith in Christ.
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? (1Pe 4:17)
What Peter says is logical. Judgement is God's way of testing, trying, discipling and refining His people, the apple of His eye, the Church. When its all over there will be a final judgement on the world. But right now Judgement is for God's people everywhere. Nations will feel the impact too, but they are not the focus, the Church is the focus.
There isn't much talk in the Western Church of this judgement. The Church in the rest of the world is being hammered by overt persecution. Such is only just now beginning in the West. There isn't really any talk of the Church being judged. I am not sure there is any whispering even. No prayer vigils being called in the Western Churches that I know of. Hand wringing, yes. Complaining, yes. Distractions about other issues, yes. But no repentance, no prayer of confession, no calls to prove ourselves':
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? (2Co. 13:5)
But, but, but... see John (1Jn 5:3) for the 'how do I know':
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
Is the Church obeying God's commands? Or is it nuancing its way around sin? Is it declaring and calling believers to the clear teaching of God's Word? Or is it using all its PhD's to justify why Biblical categories of sin are not applicable here, why our situation is different, why deliberate disobedience is really obedience: or in the words of Is 5:20 why Evil is really good, why Bitter is really sweet, why Darkness is really light. There's your answer. No the Church is not keeping God's commandments. It is doing everything in its power to subvert, redefine, dance around, or ignore God's commandments. It won't end well for those churches, denominations and leaders that continue this. Jesus was graphic about it in John 15:1-2
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
This is the most frightening verse in Scripture. The Lord is going to use these present judgements to take away the unfruitful chaff, the fakers, the pretenders and the false professors. But if you are unimpressed, or unmoved, perhaps this will help, from Matthew 13:49-50:
So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Sever? Why 'sever'? Because this refers to the visible body of Christ, the visible Church comprised of believers and fakers. The question that should be on every believer's mind is: what do I do now that I know God is judging His Church? The answer is: repent. The answer is the same to the believer that has fallen into sin. The answer is the same to the believer that has not fallen into sin ... lately. Repent. But what else? What do I do after I repent? Remember what Peter said in 1Pe 4:12-13:
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
So after the repentance, rejoice. It is part of God's work in us making us like His Son, and making us fit for His Kingdom. I don't know about you, but that is something worth being refined for, even when it hurts… a lot.
